介绍(英)Although trained as a lawyer, Desboutin inherited considerable wealth from his landowning family, enabling him to abandon his profession and instead pursue his interest in the arts. After a sharp decline in his fortune, he turned to printmaking, which offered much needed financial security with his in-demand portrait prints garnering from one to two hundred francs each. This self-portrait, unusually large and heavily worked for Desboutin, depicts a new type of artist. Here, rather than representing himself with traditional tools of his trade, Desboutin masterfully created an image of a bohemian: his simple jacket and disheveled hair, barely contained under a cap, are complimented only with a pipe. The simplicity and immediacy of the portrait is heightened further by his direct gaze over his shoulder. Recognized by many as Desboutin’s masterpiece, this print was awarded a third-class medal at the Salon of 1879, and a medal of honor at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.
