介绍（英）	While living in Ipswich in the 1750s, Gainsborough made a number of intensely wrought graphite drawings of trees such as the present sheet, once part of a sketchbook. Gainsborough is now generally admired for his abstract approach to landscape, but this drawing demonstrates how careful observation provided a foundation for his compositions. Here he brushed in a layer of gray wash to provide a tonal foundation then used graphite strokes to describe the foliage. He varied the pressure to delineate delicate leaf clusters, indicating light falling from the left.
